Relax in the Peace of Nature
As soon as you step out of your car, the scent of pine and spruce fills the air. Vukov Konak is surrounded by thick forest that stretches in every direction, muffling any noise from the road below. The only sounds you’ll hear are birdsong, the rustle of leaves, and the occasional crack of a branch under a deer’s hoof. It’s the kind of quiet that lets you truly switch off—no city hum, no traffic, just the rhythm of the mountain.
The lodge sits on a gentle slope with a wide clearing that opens up views toward the Romanija plain. On clear days you can watch the sun dip behind distant ridges from our wooden terrace. We keep the outdoor area simple: a fire pit surrounded by log benches, a few hammocks strung between old oaks, and a small herb garden that supplies our kitchen. Evenings here are best spent with a blanket, a drink, and the crackle of burning wood.
Because we’re at roughly 1,100 meters above sea level, the air stays crisp even in summer. You’ll sleep deeply and wake up to mist drifting through the trees—perfect for a slow morning coffee on the porch. We’ve deliberately kept nighttime lighting low so you can see the stars without interference. Pack a sweater for the cool mountain nights, and leave your alarm clock behind.
Homemade Food Straight from the Hearth
We don’t run a restaurant, but every stay includes breakfast and the option to order home-cooked meals made with ingredients we grow or source from neighbors. Our kitchen is small and unpretentious, built around a wood-burning stove and a stone hearth where we bake bread and slow-cook stews. If you arrive hungry, tell us in advance and we’ll have something warm waiting—no one should start a mountain evening on an empty stomach.
The menu changes with the seasons. In spring you might find wild nettle soup and trout from a nearby stream. Summer brings garden tomatoes, roasted peppers, and thick slices of homemade cheese. Autumn is for mushrooms we forage in the surrounding woods, and winter meals are heavy with beans, smoked meat, and cabbage. We also keep our own honey and make preserves from forest berries, so breakfast always includes something sweet that tastes of the mountain.
We can accommodate most food preferences if you let us know ahead of time. Vegetarians will find plenty of choice, and we’re happy to prepare simple dishes for children. Coffee is strong, tea is herbal from the hillside, and if you’d like to try our house rakija, we’ll pour you a small glass to warm up by the fire.
Explore the Trails around Vukov Konak
You don’t need to be an experienced mountaineer to enjoy the paths near the lodge. Right from our gate, a marked trail leads through the forest to a viewpoint over the Miljacka canyon, roughly 40 minutes on foot. It’s an easy walk with only a few gentle inclines, suitable for families and older visitors. The viewpoint itself is a rocky outcrop with a bench we built—pack a snack and stay a while.
For longer outings, you can connect to the network of trails crossing the Ozren and Trebević mountains. A popular half-day hike takes you to the abandoned bobsleigh track from the 1984 Winter Olympics, partially reclaimed by moss and ferns. The terrain is mixed: some broad forestry roads, some single-track paths through beech woods. We have maps at the lodge and can point out routes that match your energy level. In winter the same trails become snowshoeing routes, and we can lend you basic gear if you don’t have your own.
- Vukov Konak – canyon viewpoint: 2.5 km, easy, 1 ½ hour round trip
- Vukov Konak – Trebević peak: 7 km, moderate,

If you’re a mountain biker, bring your bike—several of these trails are rideable and we have a secure storage shed. In spring and early summer, wildflower spotting is a bonus: purple crocuses, yellow gentians, and whole meadows of lily of the valley. Ask our family about hidden spots; we’ve been wandering these hills since childhood and know where the sweetest strawberries grow.
Your Cozy Retreat in Every Season
Vukov Konak doesn’t shut down when the snow arrives—if anything, that’s when it feels most magical. The lodge is built for all-weather comfort: thick log walls, a large central fireplace, and radiators that keep every room toasty. We plow the access road regularly, so a standard car can reach us even in winter. Many guests book a long weekend just to read by the fire, watch snow fall on the pines, and take short walks in the silent, white forest.
Summer brings its own charm. The forest keeps temperatures pleasant even during Sarajevo’s hottest days, making the lodge a natural escape just half an hour from the city. Families often spend afternoons playing in the meadow, foraging for herbs, or simply lounging on the terrace while children chase butterflies. We can set up a barbecue if you’d like, and there’s plenty of space for outdoor games.
Autumn and spring are the quietest times—ideal if you want true solitude. September brings mushroom-picking season, while May explodes with greenery and blossoms. Each season changes the light, the smells, and the soundscape of the mountain, so even repeat guests find something new. Whenever you choose to come, we’ll make sure you feel at home the moment you walk through the door.
Old school way that simply works. Send us an email with your inquiry at and you will get an answer in no time. Please keep in mind that during the season you may have to wait a bit.
