Outside Vukov Konak

Vukov Konak has a plot of about half a hectare (1,2 acres), mostly covered with woods. Outside our land there are deep forests, beautiful meadows, and cattle pastures. Further on you can enjoy the hiking paths and endless spots of natural beauty.

On the plot, right next to the main building we have a smaller house, suitable for a group 6-12 to dine in privacy or just to enjoy a few drinks casually. It also serves as a secondary sleeping room, when needed.

We have a covered, open air summer kitchen and sitting area. Here guests can watch the chef at work and food being prepared on the sač (traditional way of cooking) or meat rolling on a spit.

Further behind the main house of Vukov Konak there is a Finnish sauna, fixed with an original Finnish wood burning stove. Guests are welcomed to book the sauna for their private use for two hours per booking. For a larger group or special occasions we also rent it for a whole evening. The sauna will be heated traditionally for Christmas, New Years Eve and Midsummer Night, and as often as anyone at Vukov Konak likes to have a good sauna bath.

The Warmth of the Main Guest House

Step through the heavy wooden door of the main house and you are greeted by the scent of aged pine and the gentle crackle of a stone fireplace. The house was built with local timber and river rock, every beam bearing the marks of hand tools. We can host up to fourteen guests in five comfortable bedrooms, each one different – some with whitewashed walls and soft lighting, others with exposed timber and views deep into the forest. Thick woollen blankets, handwoven rugs and antique furniture give the rooms a cosy, lived-in feel that wraps you in calm.

Downstairs, a large common room invites you to sink into a sofa with a book from our shelf, or to share travel tales with other guests by the warmth of the fire. In winter, the whole house is heated by wood-burning stoves, and there is always a kettle humming on the stove for tea or mountain herbs. The bathroom facilities are modern and spotless, yet carefully fitted to respect the rustic atmosphere, with steaming hot water always available after a long walk.

For families or small groups, the house layout can be adjusted to offer extra privacy. The smaller house next door also serves as an annex, so larger parties never feel crowded. Whether you come alone for a quiet retreat or with friends for a celebration, the main house gives you a true home in the highlands.

A Taste of the Highlands: Our Culinary Philosophy

At Vukov Konak, meals are more than just food – they are a celebration of the land. Our chef draws on generations of recipes, using ingredients sourced from nearby farms or gathered from the meadow's edge. The sač, a heavy iron bell placed over glowing embers, slowly bakes tender lamb, veal or vegetables, sealing in juices and a smoky aroma. Meanwhile, the spit turns over an open fire, browning whole chickens or a piglet to golden perfection.

Every morning we bake fresh bread in a wood-fired oven, and our homemade cheeses and preserves come from family producers just down the valley. Guests are welcome to watch and even lend a hand, learning the rhythms of this ancient way of cooking. In the summer kitchen, surrounded by the sound of birdsong, you understand why food cooked with wood and patience tastes so different.

On any given day, the rhythms of cooking fill the clearing with irresistible aromas. Some of the dishes you might encounter during your stay include:

  • Slow-baked lamb under the sač, fragrant with rosemary and garlic
  • Spit-roasted suckling pig, crackling crisp and tender
  • Fresh trout caught from a nearby stream, grilled over embers
  • Vegetables from our garden drizzled with cold-pressed sunflower oil
  • Homemade apple or plum pie, straight from the wood-fired oven

The menu changes with the seasons and what local hunters and gatherers bring, so there is always something new to try. Special dietary needs are happily met – just let us know in advance.

Forest Trails and Hidden Meadows

From the gate of Vukov Konak, you step directly into a network of paths that wind through ancient beech and oak forests. These trails are centuries old, once used by shepherds and woodcutters. Today they lead you to sun-dappled clearings, where wild strawberries and thyme grow underfoot. A gentle twenty‑minute walk brings you to a rocky lookout, perfect for watching the sunset spread over layers of blue hills.

We encourage guests to wander at their own pace. Marked hiking routes of varying difficulty begin nearby, taking you deeper into unspoilt nature. In spring, the meadows burst with crocuses and gentians; in autumn, the whole hillside blazes in red and gold. Deer, wild boar and dozens of bird species make these woods their home, and with a little luck you may spot a golden eagle soaring overhead.

For those who prefer a quieter exploration, we can arrange guided walks with a local naturalist who knows every herb and mushroom. Maps and walking sticks are always available at the house, so you never feel lost. If you simply wish to sit and listen, the silence of the forest is the most luxurious sound of all.

Four Seasons of Simple Pleasure

Each season paints Vukov Konak in a different light. Winter mornings bring a deep silence, broken only by the sound of snow sliding from a branch. After a sauna, you can roll in the fresh powder, then warm up by the crackling fire with a mug of mulled wine. Christmas and New Year’s Eve become intimate gatherings, with candles and traditional songs filling the house.

Spring is a time of renewal – the first lambs in the neighbouring pastures, the return of migrant birds, and the perfume of blossoming plum trees. By Midsummer, the sun lingers until late, and guests gather around the fire pit until the early hours, telling stories and roasting marshmallows. The sauna is heated well into the night, and you can watch the stars emerge, crystal‑clear in the mountain air.

Autumn brings the harvest: we pick grapes from old vines and press juice, dry wild mushrooms, and fill jars with ajvar. The forests become a painter’s palette, and the cooler air is perfect for long hikes. No matter when you visit, Vukov Konak asks you to slow down and savour the rhythm of the countryside.
