Rooms

Vukov Konak is a small mountain lodge with three rooms for guests. The rooms are very basic, cosy and comfortable, but simple. (The bathroom and toilets are downstairs.) Staying in any of the rooms is 30 KM (BAM) per person per night including breakfast.

There are Big Wolf Family room (4 pers.), Small Wolf Family (2-3 pers.), and Wolves In Love (2 pers., double / twin bed). If you have a group of people coming or need to know more about our accommodation options, please contact us. Vukov Konak can accommodate up to max 12 persons at a time (incl. the small house in the yard).

(Our fourth guestroom, Two Wolfs (2 pers., twin beds), is currently being used by our staff.)

Our Surroundings and Nature

Vukov Konak sits deep in the quiet hills, surrounded by thick forest and fresh mountain air. The lodge is far from the noise of towns, so you can hear the wind in the trees and, if you’re lucky, the howl of real wolves at night. Just outside the gate, the forest begins — dense pine and beech, with clearings full of wild berries in late summer. The nearest village is a few kilometres down a winding gravel road, which makes the location feel wonderfully remote.

There is no light pollution here, so the night skies are incredible. On clear evenings, you can see the Milky Way stretching right over the roof of the lodge. In the morning, mist often fills the valley below, and you can watch it slowly lift while having your first coffee on the terrace. Local farmers sometimes pass by with their sheep or goats, and you might spot deer grazing at the forest edge if you sit quietly.

We are located at roughly 1,100 metres above sea level, so summers stay pleasantly cool, and the air is always clean. Spring brings carpets of wildflowers, autumn turns the whole mountainside gold and red, and winter brings deep, silent snow. Because of the altitude, we recommend taking it easy if you’ve just arrived from the lowlands — drink plenty of water and let your body adjust.

Meals and Shared Spaces

All room bookings include a simple homemade breakfast. This usually consists of fresh bread, local cheese and cured meat, homemade jam, butter, tea and coffee. We try to use as many ingredients from nearby producers as we can. On request, we can also prepare a hot breakfast with eggs (scrambled or fried) and seasonal vegetables for a small extra charge. Just let us know the evening before.

Lunch and dinner are not included in the room price, but we do offer hearty campfire-style meals on most evenings. Think slow-cooked stews, grilled meat, roasted vegetables and fresh salads — all made over an open fire or in our simple kitchen. Meals are served at one long wooden table in the common room, so everyone eats together. It’s a great way to swap stories with other travellers. A full dinner costs around 15 KM per person and must be ordered before noon on the same day. Vegetarian options are available with notice.

The ground floor has a cosy common lounge with a large stone fireplace. This is the heart of Vukov Konak — guests gather here in the evenings to read, play board games or simply warm up after a long walk. There is a small library corner with books in several languages, many about local wildlife and hiking. Tea and coffee are freely available in the common room all day, and there’s a guest fridge you can use for your own snacks and drinks. Just remember to label your things.

Hiking and Wildlife

Right from our doorstep, you can walk into some of the most untouched nature in the country. There are marked trails for all fitness levels — from an easy one-hour loop through the forest to a demanding full-day hike up to the ridge with panoramic views. We have paper maps you can borrow, and we’re always happy to give you tips at breakfast. The area is also part of a larger protected landscape, so please stick to the paths and take any litter home with you.

Wildlife is abundant here. Besides the wolves that give our lodge its name, you might see brown bear tracks, wild boar, foxes, chamois, and a huge variety of birds. We strongly recommend bringing binoculars if you have them. The dawn chorus is spectacular in spring. Just remember that these are wild animals — never approach or feed them. We can arrange a guided wildlife-watching walk with a local expert if you book ahead (extra cost applies).

In winter, many trails become perfect for snowshoeing. We have a few pairs of snowshoes to rent (10 KM per day), or you can bring your own. Skiing is possible in a small resort about 30 minutes’ drive away, but most guests come here for the peace and the chance to walk all day without meeting a single other person. The mountain silence in fresh snow is something very special.

Practical Information for Your Stay

Check-in is from 14:00 and check-out is by 11:00. If you arrive earlier or leave later, you are welcome to leave your bags in the common room. Please let us know your estimated arrival time, especially if you plan to come after dark — the last stretch of road is unlit and narrow, so it’s easier to navigate before sunset. Parking is free and right next to the lodge; there is space for up to five cars.

We accept cash payments only, in Bosnian Convertible Marks (BAM/ KM). The nearest ATM is a 25-minute drive away, so please bring enough cash with you. Mobile phone signal is weak and unreliable in the valley — think of it as a chance to really switch off. There is no Wi-Fi in the rooms, but we do have a slow, basic connection in the common room for occasional use. Not ideal for video calls, but fine for checking messages.

Vukov Konak is a family-friendly place, but please be aware we have an open fireplace and steep stairs, so keep an eye on young children. Pets are welcome by prior arrangement — just let us know in advance. We have two friendly resident dogs who get on well with visiting animals. Smoking is allowed only outside, on the terrace. Finally, pack for all weather: even in summer, evenings can be surprisingly chilly at this altitude, and a good waterproof jacket is always a smart idea.
